HbA1c test reflects the average blood glucose levels over the past 3 months. Studies show that adherence to HbA1c values as close as possible to your physicians’s recommendations may reduce the risk of complications diabetes might cause. In DMC this test can be performed by collecting capillary blood from the finger and get results within 5 minutes.
The purpose of the test
- To diagnose diabetes
- To determine whether diabetes treatment is effective and the goals of the treatment are achieved
For people with diabetes it is recommended to perform HbA1c test every 3 months or at least twice a year, in accordance with the instructions of the physician
Understanding of the result
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA):
- 4% – 6% normal test result
- 5.7% – 6.4% indicates a pre-diabetic condition
- 6.5% or more indicates the development of diabetes
The recommendation for adult diabetics is to keep the HbA1C level below 7%. It is important to know that this recommendation is general only. This result might be influenced by different factors like special medical condition, age, lifestyle etc.
